Maybe make the sampler work with video files also?

Hopefully the next thing to be added would be skinning objects to change Effects/Transitions?

***COMPLETED*** :D

Wish List for the Play List:

In the playlist a way to distinguish between Audio, Video and Karaoke files.

Maybe by a different icon for each and/or selection buttons?

It's been waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too quiet around here!

So I thought I'd add to the wish list.

How about a keychanger object(s) for karaoke.
Maybe a drop down to select +/- numbers and a text object to display the key.

- Option to add scrolling text across a video. I see this being used for bar price promotions/forthcoming events etc.
- A standard 'default' video when nothing else is playing or a music only file is being played, a bit like a screensaver.

An interesting way off adding playback of clips for track without video would possibly be to add a valuespecifier like 'VIDEOONLY' which will playback a clip or just the videopart of a rack with the currently loaded song..

You could for instance make the video preview object a dropobject for this..

I'd kinda rather see that implemented in config somehow, with a choice whether to use a visualization plugin (like milkdrop, slideshow, live footage and similar)
however this could be combined with the "videoonly" Paul mentioned, this way when you'd drop the video on the visualization, it would disappear until chosen or videoonly transparency would be changed, these objects could even have a layer value, this way you could have the visualization in front, or in the back of the video, same goes with effects...

Hi, Paul from PCDJ(UK) here.

Having sold VJ and OTSAV to DJ's for many years I can tell you the features which actually get used. You may recognise most of these features from PCDJ VJ.

When playing an audio only track DJ's like the following visual options ;

Visualisations, Winamp style. Don't have to be high resolution though.
Play a slideshow of images from the hard drive. Must be able to add/remove/change directory at will. Don't strech portrait format images like VJ does, it makes brides look fat!
Play the video only from an arbitrary video file on a loop
Arbitrarily link any video sequence to any audio track by dragging and dropping (very popular this)

Other visual effects which get used ;

Scrolling text system. Must be able to save/load banks of messages.
Instant quick text system for simple, on or off messages on screen.
Live webcam feed. Must be quick to enable/disable. Picture in picture function would be superb if it can be done. (Many karaoke jocks flick the webcam feed on during the instrumental break on a karaoke track to keep the singer amused, returning to normal graphics as the break ends.)
Background graphic customisable to any standard JPG image.

VJ has a host of visual FX. Some are great as a tech demo - video rotate, video cube for example - but rarely get used in the field.

From a sales point of view it's vital that triggering and selection of FX doesn't get in the way of DJ'ing. Most of my customers aren't computer literate and ease of use is paramount. The way VJ did things was just about perfect with the EFFECTS and BROWSER panel buttons switching between functions but never obscuring the playback decks themselves. Also having the quick drop down boxes for FX under the video preview window was a good touch. No need to have a bank of visualisations/videos on screen at all times, users are happy to click into the EFFECTS tab. Having a drop down box revealing a grid of visualisations/videos/effects might work though.

Also it's vital that karaoke support is native to the program. One very successful sales argument for DJ's looking for audio/karaoke is to say if you're taking a screen for karaoke why not use it for full video. Many, many of my customers bought VJ on that argument alone, despite VJ not having a singer list management system (that works) and not having a good key change system.

Maybe worth saying that from 20 plus audio effects, I can't remember any of my customers using them. Not one.

Sorry for harping on about VJ but if we can get Dex Video to achieve some of what VJ was doing then we've got a winner.

Thanks - Paul @ PCDJ(UK)

Good to see you here Paul.. Video is still very early in djDecks so I think it can go in any direction right now.

While I agree it needs to be simple for the average DJ whilst still offering some nice features I do think the general idea behind djDecks/DEX (being there's way more under the hood then what meets the eye) should still be true. Advanced use and features should and will (I think) be in there but a basic 'VJ style' user interface is important.

While I believe the VJ skin is property of PCDJ it might be a good starting point for video.. as seen in the current ADEX skin. And as I add video to the FX skin it will be mostly in the general 'keep it simple' feel of FX..

+1 What Paul @ PCDJ(UK) said 8)

That certainly sounds like the voice of experience.

PaulH, I think that's another good idea. In essence, the standard skin should be simple and intuitive, and then maybe have a 'go advanced' button to load another skin with more complex/advanced options.

Hi fellas.

Can't post every day since I'm busy running Computer DJ Ltd but I check this forum every day and have the beta copy.

Probably the best input I can give you is indeed the "voice of experience". Been dealing with UK DJ's for five years now, must have demo'd, instructed on and sold thousands of copies of PCDJ products in person, at shows, on the 'phone and online.

It doesn't matter how complex a product is or what features it offers. A simple, well presented skin is VITAL in selling the product. If the screen shot looks too complex you've lost sales. For me the default VJ layout was pretty good but could be improved. The on-screen EQ dials (low, mid, treble) are totally redundant for example, not one of my customers ever used them.

Good to be on the project looking forward to seeing this develop. Got to go, we've just launched a music download site at and I need to complete an instructional video for it.

Thanks - Paul Moss, PCDJ (UK)

-Intensity/depth knob for video effects
-More video effects. The Video mixer at work if an and has some great effects:
Strobe
Negative
Multiply
Mirror
Choma-key
Luminance-key
and
Picture in Picture

Most of these will require the Intensity/Depth knob though

Just a couple of ideas chaps :D

IMO it would be cool if the effect and transition script could take values from skin objects like knobs/sliders and buttons..

 Ability to play video from DVD

Would this be possible?
