Because the was not working as it should yet, I've made a VST Plugin that basically does the same thing.

* Download

* Screenshot
Image

* Usage
Load the VST plugin (BPMDetect.dll) in your favorite host, select the midi output device and start the music.
The clock signal, based on the detected music is now being sent to the selected output device.
Use the start, stop, continue and pitch bend buttons to synchronize the destination midi device with the host.

If you want to send the clock signal to another program on the same computer, first install and restart your computer.
Then select "Out to MIDI Yoke: 1" in the BPM Detection VST, and select "In from MIDI Yoke: 1" as the midi source in the program you want to synchronize.

* Registration
The shareware version will work for 5 minutes, after which you get a shareware message and the bpm output will change to 50 bpm.
If it works for you and you would like to continue using it, a registration can be bought
After purchase, log in to http://djdecks.be/register
There, click 'Registration Codes' and download 'djdecks_registration.reg'. After executing it, the bpm vst will be registered.

* Changes
v0.80
ExpDigital Infinity API used for GUI
v0.81
-Added bend up and bend down buttons
v0.82
-Fixes midi out not working correctly in previous beta
v0.83
-Fixes some bugs

New beta online. It should work better than v0.81, and I've tested it with Ableton Live.

Wow man, been looking on the whole web for a tool like this. Its a shame ableton itself doesnt know any way of detecting the bpm of an external sound source. Got a pretty neat setup now with 2 cd decks and an effect loop through ableton, controlled by a behringer bcr 2000, and the only thing i was missing was being able to synchronize everything with ableton so i can use bpm related effects. Just bought the plugin, and im lovin it.

Also, i have to say im pretty amazed of how accurate it is, being such a simple tool. Way better than detection on my cd decks, kudos to you.

Is there any chance of new versions in the near future? What im specifically looking for is being able to map the reset/stop/start buttons to midi functions.

Hi

Just checking out this post (and your other post about the standalone version)

Downloaded the VST and experimenting with it now - seem seems pretty good.

I don't need a VST - did you ever get the standalone version working at all?

Also, I see it struggles sometimes to find the beat depending on the audio you send it - I'm experimenting with using this live, and so could maybe help this be sending it a specific sub mix. How do the BPM algorithms work? Would it be better if I sent it the kick drum mic only? or does it need more data than that?

Well done for a useful product (that no-one else seems to have available)

Cheers

Paul

Hey guys, i got a little problem.

I bought the plugin, and had to format a couple of weeks ago. Switched over to windows 7, and it doesnt recognize the registry key anymore and keeps showing the shareware period error. I checked the registry and its all there. I know windows 7 is beta and all, but the registry should be the same as in vista, so i bet it doesnt work in vista as well.

Thanks for any help.

Could you try running the vst host as administrator?
Maybe it is a rights problem where for some reason the plugin isn't allowed to access the registry.

Well now im facing a new problem.

Got a new Notebook which i want to include in my dj setup with ableton installed on it. The thing is, i cant get the plugin to work at all on it. I tried 4 different Operating Systems, including the same W7 Build as on my desktop PC. Ableton always either crashes after setting the VST directory. Or it says "Caught exception in main function of BPMDetect. Cannot continue to load"

With a couple of tricks (replacing the name of the dll with one from an already working VST) i got it to show up in the device list of ableton. But it doesnt say "VST 2.4" as the type as on my desktop computer, just says "VST" and crashes ableton when trying to load it.

Im really confused. I use the same OS and the same version of Ableton on the Notebook, the only difference is obviously the hardware. Any help on this? :(

You could try to install the .NET Runtime if you haven't done so already.

Thanks for the quick answer

Unfortunately, thats not it. i wasnt aware that its required for the plugin, but after downloading the latest version of the framework, i found out that 3.5.1 was already pre-installed with the OS.

Could you maybe send me a link to older versions, or the 0.83 beta which is listed on the registration page? Maybe on of those work.

This plugin is really crucial for me.

There actually wasn't a 0.83 yet.
I've recompiled the vst, not much has changed, so I'm not sure if it will make a difference.
It does load fine when I load it in djDecks.

Now that I think about it, it might be a rights problem accessing the registry.
If this version still doesn't work, you might want to try to run Live as administrator.

As weird as it may sound, this one works just perfectly without changing anything else. Thanks a lot :)

Everything seems to work fine ..... but...

How to synchronize it with ableton 7?

I set midi output in BPM VST Plugin and when I select output in ableton preferences ( sync ) no midi clock signal is transmitting. How should I configure ableton? Please write some short tutorial how to set ableton....

Thanks
